2013/ 70 min / Romania Thousands of people from Chernovadia worked at the plant, just five miles outside the city’s borders. It was an industrial mammoth, built by one of the biggest powers in the world during the so-called “golden years” of Communism.Twenty years ago, due to a combination of human error and acute flaws in the design of the plant itself, a crack appeared in the concrete casing around the plant’s main reactor. This unleashed a chain reaction of events culminating in a series of huge explosions and nuclear meltdown. Huge radioactive clouds formed and started to move across the skies of Europe. For weeks the Communist regime tried desperately to hide the truth about what had really taken place in Chernovadia. But in the end the authorities were forced to admit to the world that there had been a serious accident. Ten years after the accident, and a long time since the fall of the Communist regime that tried to cover it up, the first real facts about what happened at Chernovadia started to emerge. |
